workshops

While you are welcome to register the day-of the workshop, pre-registration is recommended as any workshop with less than the minimum (by 9pm the Thursday prior) may be rescheduled. At Arabesque we pride ourselves on quality instruction and intimate class sizes, so a maximum student allowance may be enforced--1st Come, 1st Served. To reserve your spot in a workshop you may pre-pay at the studio with cash or credit card, or PayPal via our on-line store, or feel free to call with your credit card information. Please note tuition once paid is non-refundable. Walk-ins are welcome and if you'd still like to drop-in and register at the door/day-of PLEASE check this website before you leave home, to ensure the workshop is running and is not closed/full--this website is as painfully up-to-date as possible. (If it weren't, what good would it be?) Updates are also sent monthly through our Emailing List, so perhaps sign up today!
See schedule below for current offerings.

costume clinics

To be a dance performer it is very advantagous to know the basics of sewing & garment creation. By request, Sonya's annual costuming workshop has taken a hands-on form with Costume Clinics! Very social, for these 2-4 hours you will go thru the process of making a custom belly dance costume piece; from measuring to cutting, sewing to fitting & if time allows, decor/finishing. It is possible for everyone to leave with a completed project! If you so desire, bring pen & paper for notes (many projects include a hand-out) and also the appropriate fabric/thread/elastic/etc as we all help each other under the helpful eyes of a belly dance seamstress. If you can, please bring your sewing machine, it'll definately help your project go faster.
You will learn how to sew in these workshops, but only what is needed for the project at hand. Rudimentry sewing skills will help (ie: sewing on a button), but are not necessary--see project listing for difficulty level. Suggestions for future topics are encouraged! Pre-Registration is RECOMMENDED and cheerfully accepted by 9pm the Thursday prior & accompanied by a fabric shopping list. Drop-ins are welcome, however PLEASE check this website the day before to be sure the costume clinic is not cancelled or full--this website is painfully up-to-date! Reminders are also sent monthly through our Emailing List, so Sign up today!

All-Level DABKE Pop-Up Class with Rose
Oct 16th from 1:30-2:30pm
$25 ($35 at the door)
Pre-Register by 9pm on Wednesday, 10/13
Limited to 15 students

No prior dance experience required! Ever wondered about that high-energy line/circle dance with frolicking foot work, often seen at Lebanese weddings and Arab night clubs? This highly popular, modern-day (yet age-old), Arab tradition -- Dabke (دبكة pronounced DUB-keh)‎ -- is a wonderful way to get your heart pumping, strengthen your core, and connect with others on the dance floor!

Dabke originates from a part of the Middle East called the Levant, which includes Lebanon (Rose’s father’s homeland), as well as Jordan, Syria, and Palestine. Though often considered a more “masculine” dance form, people of all genders (and ages!) are welcome to join the Dabke line.

Rose has trained with Lebanese & Palestinian Dabke masters in both Chicago and Beirut, her father’s hometown. While a member of the troupe Firqit Surayah, Rose performed Dabke and other folkloric dances professionally to live music, multiple times a week from 2016-2018. Rose has strengthened her Dabke training in Beirut at the long-esteemed Caracalla Dance School, as well as with the Danza Group Dabke troupe.

*Please wear comfortable workout clothes and clean dance sneakers or gym shoes (that have not been worn outdoors). Though Rose will provide lower-impact modifications for all the moves covered in class, please note that Dabke is usually high-impact, so it is not recommended to dance barefoot. Since this is not a “belly dance” (Raqs Sharqi) class, hip scarves/belts are not culturally appropriate, nor is baring your belly!
