Who is Tempest...
Tempest pulls from her visual arts background (BFA from RISD), literary tendencies, and global inspirations to create dance that crosses the boundaries of time and culture. Tempest began her journey into dance in 2000, and has traveled the country to study traditional, folkloric, and fusion forms of bellydance. She is the premiere instructor of Gothic Bellydance in North America, and her extensive work in the genre has helped to define and develop the movement across the world. Her compelling performances exemplify her distinctively theatrical and expressionate style, and are rooted in oriental dance technique with a transcendent approach. Her costume designs have revolutionized the look of modern bellydance, and continue to inspire new and old generations of dancers alike.

Haunting audiences around the globe, Tempest’s area of specialty within the realm of Gothic Bellydance is "Nouveau Noir" – dance pieces that reflect the art and society of the early 1900’s, pulling from silent films, vaudeville-Denishawn style, art nouveau, art deco, and the Oriental craze. Students will learn combinations that capture the elegant form, fluid movement, and dramatic stylings of these eras, while being taught in a format that will enable them to absorb them into their own personal choreographies.

Steampunk is considered by many to be a subdivision of the Gothic Culture, or it’s crazy next-door neighbor – regardless, it’s an exciting and inspiring genre, blending Neo-Victorian, Science Fiction, and Fantasy that offers a lot of opportunity in the realm of bellydance fusion. But once again, it’s not about just having the look, but capturing the true quality and character of Steampunk in your movement and presentation. Students will explore 3 different "personas" through mini-choreographies utilizing original and fun combinations that resonate with the essence of Steampunk: "Airship Pirate", "Lady Adventurer" and "Coin-Operated Girl". In addition, students will not only learn about Steampunk music and fashion, but will be able to incorporate the material into their own style with purpose, armed with building blocks to create and define their own personas.

This dynamic workshop is for both dancers and musicians to become more adept at performing live together. It also extremely important for musicians to know how to read dancers and work with them to great the best experience both performers and the audience. This workshop geared to enable dancers to become more comfortable with dancing to live music, while aiding musicians to be more attentive and in synch with the dancers for a more cohesive and integrated experience. It's an all-inclusive activity, regardless of what level of dancer or musician you are, and will help both parties become more familiar and appreciative of the exchange of talent involved in a quality live performance.
